THE Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will close the FAS tunnel near PJU 1A/4F and PJU 1A/4D effective April 22.
The decision was made in view of the traffic problems faced by Taman Kelana Idaman residents.
The tunnel serves as an access road to the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP) and neighbouring areas such as Ara Damansara, Taman Mayang, Taman Megah Mas and Taman Emas.
The residents had raised a number of traffic and safety concerns due to the increasing number of vehicles passing through the residential roads leading to the tunnel.
Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said many large vehicles and lorries were using the tunnel daily, disturbing the peace of residents in the area.
“Road users are advised to use the Subang airport road instead,” he said.
He added that an alternative road would be built to serve as a link to Jalan PJU 1A/1 soon.
Roslan was speaking at the launch of the Petaling Jaya Sustainable Commu-nities Awards 2011 at the MBPJ main office.
“The awards is to give recognition to outstanding neighbourhoods,” he said.
Last year, 24 neighbourhoods in Petaling Jaya were assessed for the awards.
Bandar Sri Damansara Residents Association (BSDRA) emerged as the grand prize winner and awarded a development grant of RM50,000.
This year, the council hopes to attract more neighbourhoods to take part, especially PJU, Kota Damansara and Kelana Jaya.
Other than the category for best overall neighbourhood, the council also awards neighbourhoods for best green initiatives, safety measures, social integration, community management and entrepreneurship.
“Upon registering, neighbourhoods will be given a development fee of RM1,000 to start their efforts,” said Roslan.
Forms can be obtained from the MBPJ offices or through the MBPJ website at www.mbpj.gov.my.
Registration closes on June 16.
